SMEs – powering the economy

The younger the SME, the more digital

The Swiss economy and its SMEs: A success story We help to write the next chapter.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with up to 250 employees account for 99 percent of all businesses in Switzerland and provide around two-thirds of all jobs. But how digital are Swiss SMEs? A Credit Suisse survey showed that 29.1% of the SMEs polled use the latest digital technologies, such as self-organizing production systems and big data analytics, either heavily or very heavily. Newer companies (founded after 2010) utilize these technologies more heavily than older companies (founded prior to 1991 – see chart). The simplest explanation for this could be that they were able to implement these technologies from the outset and did not have to replace something that was already in place.
